Columbus's men brought with them to the New World germs against which native peoples had no natural immunity. In 1493 thousands died of European diseases in Hispaniola and Santo Domingo.

A sixteenth-century engraving depicts various methods used by Native Americans in an attempt to ward off European diseases. These remedies were fruitless, and millions of natives died.

Science, the Renaissance, and Medicine

The explorations during the age of discovery brought to Europe not only more economic wealth, but also a wealth of new knowledge about the geography of the world and the cultures of the people who lived in it. The new knowledge added to the desire to learn—a scientific spirit—that had already begun in the earlier years of the Renaissance. A scientific spirit leads to scientific inquiry, which means approaching learning with a fair and open mind, asking lots of questions, considering all possibilities, and drawing conclusions from close observation, research, and testing.
